Copyediting – the first process

Copyediting is normally the first pass in any editing process. Clearing up any errors or issues in this phase clears the way for an effective substantive edit if one is required.

Copyediting looks at all the following elements of a document, checking, correcting or clarifying where needed

The text

  • How numbers are used

The language

  • Clarity
  • Punctuation
  • Grammar
  • Tenses
  • Syntax

The style

  • Checking against nominated style
  • Consistency in use of terms
  • Abbreviations
  • References – accuracy and style

The look

  • Page layout
  • Typography and line breaks
  • Heading and caption styles
  • Tables and charts
  • Illustrations
